The spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport has awarded Sergio García Sánchez with the National Illustration Prize 2022.
The jury defines Sergio García as an illustrator who “has his own unique language” with which he expands the book format “taking graphic narration to other places” through images that “in themselves narrate”.
This prize, worth 20,000 euros, is awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sport with the aim of recognising and distinguishing the work carried out by a Spanish illustrator in the field of books and literature in any of the Spanish languages.
Sergio García is lecturer in the Drawing Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Granada and has worked, among others, for The New Yorker, The New York Times and El País and for publishers such as Toon Books, Dargaud, Delcourt, Dibbuks, Ediciones Santillana or Ediciones SM; he has been awarded the ÑH, APIM, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, School Library Journal, Kirkus, Festival International de Bande Dessinnée de Sierre & CBBD-Centre Belge de la Bande Déssinne prizes.
We are very happy for this important award that Sergio García has obtained, an award that adds to those already obtained in his long career. We have had the pleasure of working with Sergio on the edition of the also award-winning limited edition New York portfolio and we attest to the commitment and care with which he approaches every detail of his rich production.
